Naujaat - Repulse Bay, Marts 12th. 1998.
I arrived to Naujaat through Coral Harbour by Calm Air yesterday at13:30. When you arrive at Naujaat it is clear immediately that it is a village where a lot of inuit people are living, everybody wish you welcome and asked you questions like: "Are you Akukitsormioq, from Greenland? Welcome."
After have putting my stuff at the place where I am going to stay Steven took me for a ride around the village. Appr. 500 people live here in Naujaat. Something very important is going on here, the first is constructiowork of enlarging the school. The next big event is the arrival of the dogteam.
There is one greenlander here in Naujaat. Her name is Navarana. She is married to a canadian guy she meets in Greenland. When we met each other at the Hamlet office of Naujaat, where she works, people were gathering around us to listen to our talk and language. When we stopped talking, they asked us to continue because they like to listen to our dialect.
Nunavut as a government will be established april 1st. 1999. It reminds me of the Greenlandic homerule, and I am thinking of how it will have an impact on the people here in Nunavut. I mean when a people starts to have their own responsibility of their own land and culture it has a big influence on peoples selfconfidence. It has a big influence on individuals. The individual get it own elfconfidence and it is aware of itīs own responsibility. One question keep coming all the time though. What will happen to all these kids, when they grow up as teenages and young people in about ten twenty years? What are they going to do? How will they future be? Are they going to have tourism? With mining? There are a lot of questions which remainsi unanswered untill the things starts going on in the future.
The dogteam, I think, will arrive to Naujaat Saturday or Sunday. The village here have a plan for Monday to build an igloo and after that we are invited to drink tea there and later on having a feast with Naujaat people.
