Karo was born in Paamiut. She lived different places from Nanortalik to Uummannaq. In 1981 she got examintation school-leaving certificate.  She was a temporary engaged teacher in different villages. In 1988 she started studying at Ilisimatusarfik, University of Greenland. She graduated as a cand.phil in Cultur and social history in 1996. She has since used her education as scienceassistant for Danish institute of clinical epidemiology, having projects like "communication between patient and doctor"

In 1991 she was the first greenlandic female ever to cross the greenlandic icecap on skii along with three other women.
